Brett Horley.
Brett Horley
Founding Partner
Brett is a private safari guide with FGASA Level III and SKS Birding qualifications. He has an innate ability to identify his guests’ safari dreams and taps into a unique set of resources and private network to make those dreams a reality. He has vast experience across Africa and travels to some of the most unique destinations and habitats in search of the rarest species on (and off) the continent.
James Gilmour
Partner: Marketing & Business Development
James has nearly two decades of marketing and brand building experience which - coupled with a deep passion for the safari industry and particular enthusiasm for searching for the white lions of Kruger - makes him an exciting addition to the executive team at BHS.
Chloë Lindenberg
Marketing and Product Manager
Chloë made travelling a priority once she began her career as a Copywriter and realised the value of telling stories and connecting people with wildlife and nature. Her professional and personal passions connected as she embarked on excursions to see the gorillas in Uganda, snorkel in Lake Malawi, climb sand dunes in Namibia, and cross the Okavango Delta in a mokoro. She’s been everywhere with BHS and manages the core brand messaging of the business.
Maki Shahali
Operations Manager
Maki has a passion for travel and connecting with people, and she’s made her career out of combining those two passions. Originally from Paris, she followed her heart to Africa where she has lived, explored, and scuba-dived the continent from Togo to Tanzania and Mozambique. Maki’s extensive travel experience and enthusiasm for wildlife tourism have her exceptionally equipped to book your journey.
Jo Cooper.
Jo Cooper
Senior Sales Consultant
Jo has spent over a decade on the red, dusty roads as a safari guide and intra-African tour planner. Having seen more African border crossings than most, Jo has extensive operational experience and knowledge of the safari landscape in Southern and East Africa and the equatorial forests inhabited by the Great Apes. His unshakeable passion for the raw and rich nature of Africa and Africans is entirely contagious, and his burning urge to share this magic with the world leads our sales team in creating safari experiences that speak to the heart.
Kayla Zoon.
Kayla Zoon
Social Media Community Manager
Kayla is a content creator and wildlife photographer, and she has a master's in Conservation Ecology, which brings a unique awareness to her work behind the lens at BHS. Kayla has devoted seven years to conservation and research, working in various roles within the industry, including being a FGASA qualified Field Guide, research assistant, science officer, GIS technician, and social media manager, so the footage she captures and the stories she creates through media are not only alluring, but informed and full of meaning.
Cecilia Theron-Du Preez
Design and Merchandise
Cecilia is a driven professional with a background in graphic design and a passion for nature that led her to a life spent between South Africa’s Lowveld and Mozambique’s sunny shores. She’s engaging with acute attention to detail and is an expert multitasker as a mother of two little girls. Cecilia's eye for design is aligned with our bushveld philosophy and her high standard ensures the best suppliers are at work on our clothing line and company merchandise.
Liv Bedfrod.
Liv Bedford
Safari Consultant
Liv brings an acute understanding and expertise to our internal systems at BHS, with specialist qualifications in Finance, Accounting and Tax, and an experienced background in data research and analytics. Her quickness, cleverness, and penchant for accuracy makes her an asset behind the scenes, where she streamlines our processes. Liv’s super power (aside from spreadsheets) is firmly rooted in the international food and wine industry, where she has led teams and refined training and performance on some of the most cut-throat restaurant floors out there.
As a company, BHS Safari Company strives to make a positive impact through our tourism ventures by contributing to creating economic independence for local communities, ensuring that they benefit from our tourism enterprises. Our focus is on buffer zone communities – integrating those people living on the boundaries of wildlife reserves. Socio-cultural sustainability involves promoting authentic cultural exchange and preserving local traditions, whilst encouraging community members to see tourism in a positive light – an opportunity to start their own businesses to service tourists, allowing adults to feel a sense of self-respect, pride and ownership through income generation.
Communities
From our base in Hoedspruit, BHS supports youth from buffer zone communities on a path to pursue careers in conservation, hospitality, and tourism. Through education and exposure to wilderness areas, young members of these communities can become contributors to local wildlife economies, encouraging a personal connection with nature, financial benefit, and investment in the future.
Conservation
BHS is passionate about protecting Africa’s wilderness habitats and wildlife populations. Poaching, human encroachment, and habitat loss are three primary threats to the survival of the wild, and the solutions to these issues are complex, but through tourism that gives back to our network and conservation partners, we are sharing our impact and encouraging a culture of sustainable travel.
Contribution
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and each step you take with us preserves our African wilderness and wildlife populations. Through your safari you are contributing directly to the protection of wilderness areas, to anti-poaching efforts, to supporting local communities and most importantly, to protecting biodiversity in Africa. BHS is part of a tourism network that creates change.
Collaboration
Explore places and experience moments far beyond your realm by allowing us to connect you to the people and places we know are as passionate and devoted to the bush and her raw potential as we are. Our partnerships are based on the shared belief that safari experiences are life changing and that your African adventure can help build a stronger future for conservation.
