Rwanda is the custodian of the last remaining habitat for mountain gorillas and other unique forest primates in tropical Africa. The Virunga Mountains and Akagera National Park are places of intrigue and mystery that await meaningful exploration.
The diminutive country of Rwanda packs some serious punch as a safari destination. It has both Big Five territory and is home to some of the only habitat for endangered mountain gorillas in the world. The mist-shrouded Virunga Mountains have been the subject of moving documentaries about wildlife conservation in an African context, and they are as enchanting to the naked eye as they are on screen. Here, we trek to see the silverbacks that rule these volcanic slopes, while down on the savannah plains of Akagera, we get to drive and walk among iconic species that have been reintroduced as part of a powerful conservation project through African Parks.
