Clarity Mathonsi’s Conservation Journey
Conservation is never just about wildlife. It is about ecosystems, land, responsibility, discipline and the people willing to commit their lives to protecting it.
Thanks to the support of the BHS Foundation community, Clarity Mathonsi was awarded a 2026 bursary: a meaningful step toward building a long-term career in conservation.
What began as ambition is now becoming action.
As this apprenticeship begins, the journey is already unfolding. Early mornings in the field, structured learning, practical experience, and the steady development of confidence and capability are laying the foundations for something lasting.
This bursary was never intended as a once-off sponsorship. It is a deliberate pathway designed to turn potential into professional readiness. Through mentorship, hands-on experience, and sustained support, Clarity is gaining the resilience, knowledge and grounding required to build a meaningful future in the conservation sector.
Building on Real Momentum
Clarity’s progress did not happen overnight.
In 2025, he achieved two major milestones:

That preparation matters. Conservation demands technical competence, resilience, and a clear understanding of why the work truly matters.
Now, in 2026, that progress is being strengthened through a carefully designed 12-month paid apprenticeship, bridging education and employment through structured field experience and formal training.

Six Months in the Greater Kruger
Clarity is currently completing the first phase of the programme in the Greater Kruger. This initial six-month placement embeds him within a working reserve, where he is fully immersed in the daily rhythm and responsibility of operational conservation.
This phase was designed to move beyond theory and place him inside a real conservation environment, where learning begins before sunrise and unfolds according to the needs of the land. The days are long, often unpredictable, and the decisions made carry real consequence. Here, conservation is not abstract. It is operational, immediate and deeply practical.
He is gaining direct exposure to the complexity of managing and protecting a reserve, observing how teams assess risk, balance priorities and carry the responsibility of safeguarding wildlife and wilderness. It is the kind of real-time learning that cannot be replicated in a classroom.
These early days mark the beginning of an immersive learning experience where field skills, judgement and confidence will steadily develop over time.
Six Months at the Southern African Wildlife College
Following his field placement, Clarity will complete a structured qualifying course at the Southern African Wildlife College.
This phase focuses on the professional competencies required in modern conservation, including:

Mentorship and Professional Development
Throughout the year, Clarity will also receive ongoing professional and personal mentorship.
Mentorship ensures that experience translates into wisdom. It provides:

This support is critical in shaping long-term confidence and clarity within the industry.

A Pathway Into Employment
This apprenticeship is more than a training placement. It is a long-term investment in Clarity’s future within the conservation sector.
By the end of 2026, he will leave with more than qualifications. He will have gained meaningful field experience, practical confidence and a grounded understanding of what the work truly demands. Just as importantly, he will have a stronger sense of direction and purpose within the industry he is stepping into.
At BHS, we believe conservation is generational work. Protecting wilderness is not only about what we do on the ground now, but about who we invest in to carry it forward. The future of these landscapes depends on capable, committed people who are prepared to take responsibility when it is their turn.
Clarity’s journey is part of that long view. It reflects a belief in potential, in mentorship, and in creating opportunities that lead to real careers, not short-term placements. We are proud of the commitment he has shown so far and look forward to seeing him continue to grow into the conservation professional he is steadily becoming.
Thank you for your support!
